                IMMUNOLOGY (Institute of Immunology)

                 

                       The human immune system consists varies types of cells, such as lymphocyte, monocyte, dendritic cell. These cells keep our bodies from infection, and help repair damaged tissues. An overactive immune system responding can cause autoimmune disease like allergies. Lately, immune cells and immunomodulating protein were successfully used in clinical trial to fight against cancer.

                       Tsinghua University Institute of Immunology was founded in 2014 with a total of 12 labs built in, it mainly focuses on the advanced research of immune response and immunological disease. Researches within labs cover many areas of immunology, including immune system, the development of immune cells, autoimmune disease, inflammatory disease, infection immunity, the mechanism and translational research of tumor immunology. Meanwhile, varies of immune cells are studied by our labs, including the development, activation, function and important biological mechanism of T cells, B cells, dendritic cells, macrophage, natural killer cells and natural lymphocyte. Our PIs are using different research modes, like disease models, dynamic cell biology, molecular biology and biochemistry, dedicated to reveal the molecular mechanism of related disease, including their tissues, cells, intracellular signal transduction, transcriptional control and epigenetics, and develop new therapeutical treatments and innovative drugs for immune related disease based on them.

                       We are aiming to become the top immunology research center of China, even Asia, to cultivate the new generation of talents for basic immunology and translational research. In the future 5 years, our institute will expand our research directions, and increase to 20 labs. We’ll also improve and advance our infrastructure to provide support for more comprehensively and thoroughly research on immunology and translational study.

                 

                OncoBiology

                      

                       Cancer is one of the major diseases we are facing across the nation, with high fatality rate. Over 2.5 million person develop cancer each year and 1.4 million of them were dead. The research on Tumor Biology had achieved great progress in the last few years, but the mechanism of how tumor develop and transfer and therapy of treatment are still waiting for a major breakthrough. As the major department of TUSM, professors are focusing on studying features and patterns of tumor biology, especially on explaining the process and mechanism of molecular actions during development, in order to find an ideal treatment technology and therapy.

                       In 5 years, Tsinghua University will continuing recruiting world top cancer biologist, keeping improving facilities and faculty teams building. Major focus directions including mechanism of tumor development and transfer, tumor genomics and epigenetics and animal models, and so on. We are collaborating with Institute of Immunology, Stem cell and regenerative medicine center and Tsinghua University Affiliated hospitals to engage the combination of basic research and clinical research, and looking for more clinical partners to build translational medicine research center to transform scientific research into practical measures.

                 

                Infectious Diseases

                 

                       Infectious diseases has always been a major threat to public health, national economy, social stability and national security. Our level of scientific research and technology of epidemic prevention and control does have a quite huge gap with developed countries, which leads to the situation that both our facilities and technologies are heavily rely on them.

                       The foundation of Tsinghua University AIDS Research Center signals a fresh start for Tsinghua University Department of Infectious Diseases. Many global talents of this area joined us and together founded the Tsinghua University School of Medicine Infectious Diseases Research Center. There are 6 labs operating in the center, concentrating on exploring the pathogenesis of bacteria and virus, as well as ways of prevention and control. Our school has also established facilities to support research on infectious diseases, including BSL2 experimental animal platform, protein test platform and small molecule drug screening platform. A BSL3 lab is currently under preparation, aiming to improve the infrastructure for research on major infectious diseases, and enhance international influences.

                       The goal of Tsinghua University Department of Infectious Diseases is to expand the faculty team and research areas, become the world top research and talents cultivation center, to provide technical support for breaking major difficulties of infectious disease prevention and control, as well as educate leading talents in related areas.

                 

                Neuroscience and Neural Engineering

                        

                Human Brain is the most complicated natural system known, it has over 1 billion nerve cells and controls every aspect of our daily lives with highly complicated but precisely connected neural network, from heart rate, appetite to emotions and memories. It is obvious that one little mistake within the system can cause severe illness for our bodies, including Autism and Mental retardation, depression and addiction, as well as Alzheimer Disease and Parkinson’s Disease. Expenses spent on these diseases has surpassed cardiovascular disease and cancer and patients suffered much more because of them. However, we don’t have any efficient treatment for most of the mental illness. Based on Conservative projections, there are about 200 millions of chronic psychotics and neurodegenerative diseases patients in China and the data keep growing due to aging of population. As a result, it’s urgent for us to find out the mechanism and proper treatment for these kinds of diseases.

                The IDG/McGovern Institute for Brain Research at Tsinghua University was established in 2011, with the generous support from the McGoverns and IDG. The goal is to build a world leading, new technology driven brain research center. The Institute currently hosts more than 20 outstanding faculty members in the fields of neuroscience and neuroengineering. Scientists working in the IDG/McGovern Institute at Tsinghua University use the latest advances in molecular and cellular biology, imaging, electrophysiology, and behavioral techniques to investigate how brain functions and how to prevent and treat brain disorders.

                 

                Cell and molecular biology

                 

                       Modern biomedical research has reached molecular level, human are trying to fully comprehend biological phenomena inside the cell as well as among cell groups, and reveal the mechanism of how cells function and control. As a fundamental and advanced subject, the research of cell and molecular biology plays an important role in revealing the pathogenesis and follow-up medical intervention

                       Tsinghua University School of Medicine paid high attention to build the subject and talents education since it was founded in 2001, established 20 globally competitive labs. Research fields includes membrane proteins and cell signaling, epigenetics and cancer, damage repair and recombination, stem cells and regenerations. Several world leading technologies are performed during research, such as Cryopreservation electron microscope, X-ray crystallography, Ultrahigh resolution microimaging, deep sequencing, gene editing and functional mass spectrometry, dedicated to reveal the nature of the life and molecular mechanism of diseases. In the last few years, TUSM had some major breakthroughs in cell and molecular biology and published on major scientific journals like Nature, Cell and Science.

                 

                Biomedical engineering

                 

                       Tsinghua University Biomedical Engineering is one of the first group of national subject units, and one of 8 national key subjects. Graduate, undergraduate and PhD students were first enrolled in 1979, 1982 and 1986. After 30 years of development, the subject is recognized with its strict discipline and outstanding academic reputation.

                       We proudly possessed a faculty team with global views, local based and a balanced age scale. Core research fields including neural engineering, medical imaging, micronano medicine and tissue engineering and medical devices. The department focuses on not only core fields, but also developing innovative medical devices, equipment and treatments, with many of them have been commercialized to practical applications. The department founded ‘Tsinghua University Biomedical Imaging Research Center’, ‘Multi-modal Medical Imaging Engineering Research Center’ and at the same time, platforms like ‘National Engineering Research Center at Beijing’ and ‘National engineering laboratory of neural regulation technology’ provide powerful support for the department. We also established collaboration with top medical devices companies and CFDA. We co-founded Biomedical Engineering Joint Research Center with John Hopkins University and co-founded Research center for advanced genomics with Columbia University.

                 

                Public Health

                 

                       Research Center for Public Health of Tsinghua University (TPHRC) was established on July 26, 2010. With its multidisciplinary approach, TPHRC seeks to produce constructive academic research and social policy proposals that will contribute to solving serious public health problems brought about by tremendous social and economic transformation in China.

                Major research areas of Public Health includes Global Health Governance and Promotion, Health Management and Policy Analysis, Health Communication, Vaccinology and Preventive Medicine, Health Statistics, epidemiology, health law and Ethics.

                In September 2010, TPHRC was authorized by the State Council’s Degree Committee to accredit Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. Beginning in September 2011, TPHRC will gradually recruit industry professionals to attend Public Health Training Courses and enroll in a specialized MPH graduate degree program. In 2013, TPHRC was authorized to accredit International Master of Public Health degree to provide opportunity for Health Officials from developing countries. In 2016, Executive Master in Translational Medicine was accredited, to provide a platform for further education for managers in healthcare areas. 

                In terms of its curriculum design, TPHRC is distinct from traditional public health education, emphasizing the combination of health sciences, management sciences, and social medicine, and drawing on MBA and MPA case studies adopted by Harvard University. The graduates will be expected to exhibit strong leadership, good management with emergent incidents.

                      In December 2016, Tsinghua University School of Medicine established collaboration with CFDA, started research on medical regulatory, TPHRC strives to become the think tank for China’s policy on regulatory for drugs and medical devices.

                 

                Clinical Medicine (School of Clinical Medicine)

                 

                       School of Clinical Medicine used to be Tsinghua University Medical Center, and became organized by Tsinghua University School of Medicine in December 2016. It combines clinical resources from Tsinghua University and improve the quality of M.D, established training base for resident doctors and specialist physicians.

                       At the meanwhile, School of Clinical Medicine will establish the mechanism of academic evaluation and talents recruitment, gather a group of experts in clinical medicine to enhance subject strength and build high standard hospitals. Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, Yuquan Hospital and Huaxin Hospital are 3 affiliated hospitals of Tsinghua University, and also collaborated with UPMC, PLA General Hospital, Peking Hospital, Sino-Japan Friendship Hospital, Jishuitan Hospital and Beijing Institute of Neurosurgery.
